Since 2009, Doctors Without Borders (MSF) has been running a pediatric program in Koutiala, southern Mali, to combat high child mortality through prevention and treatment. To enhance care for hospitalized young patients, MSF constructed a new pediatric wing. We documented this year-long project from start to finish.
Malaria is a major cause of child mortality in the Koutiala region. Children battling malaria often lose their appetite, putting them at risk of malnutrition. Malnourished children grow weaker and become more vulnerable to severe illnesses. To break this cycle, MSF offers free, high-quality hospital care for children with life-threatening conditions and expands pediatric services across villages in the Koutiala district to prevent complications.
