Psg champions league victory sparks massive arrests across France

PSG’s Champions League triumph triggers nationwide unrest

2-minute read

The historic Champions League victory by Paris Saint-Germain sparked chaotic celebrations nationwide, resulting in 780 arrests and one fatality in Paris alone.

As soon as the final whistle echoed across the stadium, tensions escalated rapidly. On the Champs-Élysées, a group of young individuals launched an attack on a bus shelter, clashing with police forces attempting to disperse them. Near Porte de Saint-Cloud, law enforcement faced volleys of fireworks, responding with tear gas and initiating the first arrests of the night.

The unrest spread to the Périphérique, where the roadway became a battleground. Motorcycles weaved dangerously through traffic, pedestrians wandered amid stopped vehicles, and concrete barriers intended to block passage became improvised projectiles. A 24-year-old motorcyclist lost his life after colliding with one of these barriers. By dawn, a 17-year-old had been critically wounded in a knife attack and remained in a coma.

Law enforcement under siege

Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez confirmed that 57 police officers and gendarmes were injured across France. “The number of projectile launches and fireworks targeting security forces has increased significantly,” he stated. Video footage from the 8th arrondissement of Paris showed an individual firing volleys of fireworks at police lines.

Incidents of looting and vandalism were reported in nearly 15 cities, including Grenoble. According to official figures released Sunday morning, 780 individuals were detained nationwide, with 457 still held in custody.
