Minister of Land and Air Transport, Yankhoba Diémé, chaired the inaugural session of the Steering Committee (COPIL) for Transport and Mobility this Thursday. This meeting signals the official launch of the operational framework designed for this landmark sporting event.
As the first African nation to host an Olympic gathering of this magnitude, Sénégal is preparing to welcome approximately 2,700 athletes representing 206 National Olympic Committees. The event will also draw thousands of officials, volunteers, and international spectators to the country.
A structured logistics network across three hubs
To address the significant logistical requirements of Dakar 2026, the authorities have organized the transport plan around three primary zones: Dakar, Diamniadio, and Saly/Mbour. The management structure includes the Steering Committee led by Minister Yankhoba Diémé, a Technical Committee for Mobility coordinated by CETUD, and a dedicated Operations Committee at AIBD to manage traffic flow at the Blaise Diagne International Airport.
Mobility is a cornerstone of the Games’ success, particularly regarding logistics and security. The railway system is set to play a strategic role, providing rapid connections between Dakar, Diamniadio, AIBD, and Thiès.
Testing and legacy
The government is now moving into the execution phase, which will include full-scale simulations. These exercises are designed to verify the effectiveness of the transport and security protocols. Beyond the immediate needs of the competition, the objective is to establish Dakar 2026 as a showcase of Senegalese expertise and to create a permanent improvement in the nation’s transport governance.
