Senegal’s Aminata Touré clarifies governance stance after Sonko’s remarks

Following Ousmane Sonko’s recent public remarks challenging President Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s policies, Aminata Touré, spokesperson for the Diomaye Président coalition, took decisive action this morning to address concerns. The former Justice Minister firmly rejected any suggestion that the political rift signifies a retreat from governance commitments or a delay in promised reforms.

Addressing Sonko’s assertions that the administration might be softening its approach to public accountability, Touré reframed the narrative, stating: « Why claim this marks the end of accountability? Perhaps it’s the beginning of a more judicially sound and independent process. »

Within the presidential camp, the focus is shifting toward a balanced interpretation of legal frameworks and economic pragmatism in public finance management. Touré emphasized the importance of separating legal accountability from political vendettas, stressing that accusations alone cannot secure a judicial conviction.

On the sensitive issue of Senegal’s public debt and ongoing negotiations with international financial institutions, the government is advocating for a pragmatic approach grounded in fiscal realities. Rejecting the loaded terminology of « restructuring »—a term tied to the austerity measures of the 1980s—officials now prefer the concept of debt reprofiling to describe a sustainable path forward for citizens.
