In a significant move for African parliamentary diplomacy, the President of Senegal’s National Assembly, Ousmane Sonko, held a high-level meeting with Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde Kyenge, Chair of the Executive Committee of the Pan-African Parliamentary Union (UPA).

Strengthening African parliamentary institutions
The June 4 meeting took place on the sidelines of the 85th session of the UPA Executive Committee, where both leaders discussed critical proposals to enhance the Union’s operational framework and alignment with African Union policies. During the closed-door discussions, Sonko emphasized the need for structural reforms within the UPA to amplify its role in shaping continental political and institutional agendas.
Key proposals for greater impact
Sonko’s recommendations centered on two major pillars: first, the modernization of the UPA’s governance model to boost its decision-making authority, and second, the alignment of UPA resolutions with those of the African Union. He argued that such synergies would eliminate redundancy and reinforce the collective influence of African parliamentary bodies.
The National Assembly President also highlighted the importance of fostering stronger inter-parliamentary collaboration across the continent. By streamlining processes and ensuring more cohesive policy recommendations, he believes the UPA can better address Africa’s evolving governance challenges.
The encounter reflects a broader commitment among African parliamentary leaders to consolidate institutions and amplify the continent’s voice in global affairs.
