Senegal’s New Assembly Leader to Make Diplomatic Debut in Yaoundé
Senegal’s freshly elected National Assembly President Ousmane Sonko is set to attend a major Francophone parliamentary gathering in Cameroon next July.
Senegal’s Assembly President to Embark on First Foreign Mission
Ousmane Sonko, Senegal’s newly elected National Assembly President, is scheduled to attend the 51st annual session of the Francophone Parliamentary Assembly (APF) in Yaoundé from July 7 to 12, 2026.
Recently appointed to lead Senegal’s parliament following his removal as Prime Minister, Sonko’s participation marks a significant diplomatic milestone. His presence will be closely monitored by fellow delegates, as it signals Senegal’s re-engagement at the highest levels of the APF—a key organization for Francophone nations.
The event will serve as Sonko’s international debut in his new role, with political observers anticipating intense scrutiny of his performance. “His participation will be particularly scrutinized by peers, as it signals Senegal’s return to a prominent position within the APF. The first steps of the National Assembly President beyond his country’s borders are shaping up to be one of the major political highlights of this summit,” noted observers.
Cameroon’s capital is reportedly pulling out all the stops to host this high-profile gathering. Under the leadership of Hilarion Etong, Vice President of Cameroon’s National Assembly and Chair of the local organizing committee, the program promises to be packed with high-level diplomacy and youth engagement.
Youth Parliament to Converge with Senior Delegates
The APF session will coincide with the 11th Francophone Youth Parliament (PFJ), which kicks off on July 6. “By hosting both events simultaneously, Cameroon and the APF are sending a strong message about the importance of youth inclusion in governance and democratic debate. For a week, young delegates from multiple continents will engage in simulated parliamentary debates in Yaoundé’s chambers, alongside the main plenary sessions. Between Sonko’s reshaping of West African political balances and the future challenges championed by youth, the Yaoundé session is already set to become a historic milestone for the Francophone community,” analysts concluded.
