Sonelgaz-International expands its African footprint with a new 40 MW power plant in Chad
Following the successful completion of its 40-megawatt power plant in Niger, Sonelgaz-International is now turning its attention to Chad, where a similar facility is set to begin operations in N’Djamena. The announcement was made by Mourad Adjal, Algeria’s Minister of Energy and Renewable Energies, during the inauguration of the Gorou Banda plant in Niamey.
Niger’s landmark project paves the way for further expansion
The Gorou Banda power plant, inaugurated in Niamey on June 3, marked a historic milestone for Sonelgaz-International, marking its first overseas venture. The facility, which boasts a capacity of 40 MW, has significantly boosted Niger’s national electricity output by approximately 20%, while ensuring a more reliable energy supply to the capital. Yazid Djellouli, CEO of Sonelgaz-International, described the project as an “exceptional industrial and logistical achievement”, highlighting the rapid deployment of equipment via a dedicated air bridge operated by Air Algérie Cargo.
A team of over 50 engineers, technicians, and project managers worked around the clock to complete the plant in record time. The initiative underscores Sonelgaz-International’s commitment to strengthening regional energy security while exporting Algeria’s technical expertise across the continent.
Chad’s upcoming 40 MW power plant gains momentum
Building on the success of the Niger project, Sonelgaz-International is preparing to launch a second 40 MW power plant in N’Djamena. The groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled to take place in the coming days, in line with the energy cooperation agreement signed between Algeria and Chad in May.
Speaking at the Niamey inauguration, Mourad Adjal revealed that Sonelgaz-International is exploring additional opportunities in countries such as Côte d’Ivoire and Mozambique. The company aims to foster partnerships between Algerian public and private enterprises, further enhancing its role in Africa’s energy landscape.
Strengthening regional energy infrastructure
Beyond power generation, Sonelgaz-International is actively involved in upgrading and expanding electrical networks in Niger. Studies are underway to rehabilitate the Niamey-Agadez axis, with potential future contracts on the horizon. The company’s track record includes the successful execution of 8,000 MW and 4,000 MW projects in collaboration with major international firms, reinforcing its position as a key player in Algeria’s energy export strategy.
Collaborative efforts and capacity building
The project has also prioritized knowledge transfer, with Nigerien technicians receiving specialized training in plant operations and maintenance. Additionally, discussions are in progress to establish a local spare parts depot, ensuring the long-term sustainability of the infrastructure.
Fati Abarchi, Managing Director of NIGELEC, praised the partnership with Sonelgaz-International as an “exceptional experience” that is expected to leave a lasting legacy in Niger’s energy sector. Khalil Hedna, Director of Communication at Algeria’s Ministry of Energy and Renewable Energies, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the central role of international cooperation in driving sustainable development.
