Strasbourg stuns monaco in a thrilling ligue 1 comeback

Strasbourg stages a dramatic Ligue 1 revival to topple Monaco

Trailing by three goals deep into the second half, RC Strasbourg orchestrated one of the most sensational comebacks in recent Ligue 1 history to snatch a breathtaking 5-4 victory over AS Monaco on matchday 34.

The eighth-placed visitors were expected to dominate a struggling Strasbourg side, but the Alsatians were immediately thrust onto the back foot. Monaco’s high-pressing game exposed flaws in the home side’s organization, and Mike Penders was forced into an early save against Lamine Camara’s strike. The Senegalese midfielder’s predatory instincts paid off in the 9th minute, as he capitalized on a defensive error to fire past Penders with a clinical finish into the top corner.

Against all odds, Strasbourg clawed their way back into contention. A pinpoint long ball from Penders found Martial Godo, whose quick interplay with Julio Enciso caught Monaco’s defense napping. The two combined to equalize in the 34th minute, with Godo slotting home from close range after Enciso’s cross was only half-cleared. The momentum shifted almost instantly, and Camara added his second with a composed finish following Adingra’s clever layoff.

Monaco’s lead proved fleeting. Maghnes Akliouche’s fierce strike from distance was parried by Hradecky, but Ansu Fati reacted quickest to restore Strasbourg’s advantage. Christian Mawissa nearly doubled the lead in stoppage time, rattling the crossbar with a thunderous effort, leaving both teams stunned at the break.

Second-half surge seals a historic win

The restart saw Strasbourg’s intensity skyrocket. Monaco, already aware of Marseille’s victory over Rennes, had lost any remaining incentive to push for a draw. Their defensive frailties were ruthlessly exploited, starting with Ismaël Doukouré’s unfortunate own goal in the 56th minute. Diego Moreira then seized the moment, embarking on a mazy run before unleashing a venomous shot that left Penders with no chance.

Strasbourg’s hunger was insatiable. Sebastian Nanasi, fed by Godo’s inswinging cross, found the net twice in quick succession—first in the 69th minute with a clinical finish, then again in the 72nd after Enciso’s header set him up perfectly. The home crowd roared as the underdogs turned the tables completely.

The final act belonged entirely to Strasbourg. Enciso, who had tormented Monaco’s defense all evening, capped off the performance with a sublime curled effort from 20 yards out in the 84th minute. The strike, met by a thunderous ovation, sealed a night to remember at La Meinau.

The victory keeps Strasbourg’s European ambitions alive while dealing a severe blow to Monaco’s Champions League aspirations.
