VfB Stuttgart clinches final Bundesliga top-four spot after Frankfurt stalemate
In a dramatic finale to the Bundesliga season, VfB Stuttgart secured their spot in next year’s UEFA Champions League despite playing out a 2-2 draw against Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday afternoon.
The Swabians finished fourth in the standings with 62 points, leapfrogging TSG Hoffenheim (61) and Bayer Leverkusen (59), who both finished just outside the European qualification places. This marks Stuttgart’s seventh appearance in Europe’s premier club competition, including their historic European Cup run in 1980.
Late drama in Frankfurt
The match began brightly for Stuttgart as Chema Andrès put them ahead in the 10th minute with a clinical finish. Nikolas Nartey doubled their lead just before halftime, slotting home from close range after a well-worked move. However, Frankfurt fought back in the second half, equalizing through two penalties converted by Jonathan Burkhardt in the 58th and 72nd minutes.
Despite the setback, Stuttgart held firm to preserve their fourth-place finish, ensuring their Champions League campaign next season. The result leaves TSG Hoffenheim and Bayer Leverkusen to settle for Europa League qualification, while Bayern Munich claimed the Bundesliga title in emphatic fashion with a 5-1 victory over 1. FC Köln.
Relegation drama concludes Bundesliga season
At the opposite end of the table, SV Sandhausen and FC St. Pauli were relegated to the 2. Bundesliga after disappointing defeats. Sandhausen lost 2-0 at home to 1. FSV Mainz 05, while St. Pauli were beaten 3-1 by VfL Wolfsburg, who finished 16th and will face a relegation playoff against the third-placed team from the second division.
Meanwhile, Bayern Munich concluded their dominant campaign with a record-breaking 122 goals scored across all competitions, including a Harry Kane hat-trick that brought his tally to 36 in the league and 59 overall. The Bavarians secured their 35th league title with ease, further cementing their status as Germany’s most successful club.
The final standings confirm Stuttgart’s return to the Champions League after a six-year absence, offering the club a chance to compete among Europe’s elite once again.
