The Senate in the Democratic Republic of Congo has commenced its second review of the proposed bill outlining the procedures for organizing a national referendum. This significant legislative development was announced by Senate President Sama Lukonde during a plenary session held on Wednesday, June 10.
Following its transmission from the National Assembly, this crucial DRC referendum law proposal has been referred to the Political, Administrative, and Legal (PAJ) Commission. The upper house of Parliament tasked the commission with an in-depth study, granting it a strict three-day timeframe to submit its comprehensive report.
The initiative for this important legislation originated in the National Assembly, spearheaded by National Deputy Paul-Gaspard Ngondankoy, who represents the Yahuma territory in Tshopo province.
On May 9, the lower house of Parliament demonstrated overwhelming support for the text, adopting it with a substantial majority. Out of 351 deputies participating in the vote, 348 cast their ballots in favor of its adoption, while only two voted against, and one abstained.
