Togo mourns the loss of media icon Eugène Atigan

The Togolese cultural and media sectors are in mourning following the passing of Eugène Kossi Atigan-Ameti, widely known to the public as Eugène Atigan. He passed away this Wednesday, June 3, 2026, after suffering a sudden illness. With his departure, Togo loses one of the most influential figures in its broadcasting history.

For several decades, Eugène Atigan was the face of entertainment and cultural promotion on national television. As a talented host, producer, and communicator, he left an indelible mark on generations of viewers through legendary programs such as Télé Loisirs, Couleurs des Vacances, and Le Cabaret de la Saint-Valentin.

His professionalism, eloquence, and innovative spirit established him as a benchmark in the Togolese media world. Many of today’s recognized journalists and presenters benefited from his vast experience and guidance, viewing him as a true mentor of the small screen.

A career marked by significant challenges

The life of Eugène Atigan took a dramatic turn in 2009 when he was arrested at the Lomé airport in connection with a drug trafficking case. Sentenced to ten years in prison, he ultimately served eight years before being released in September 2017.

However, even while incarcerated, the man of culture never stopped creating. He dedicated himself to several artistic and social initiatives, including organizing cultural activities within the Lomé civil prison. His commitment to inmate rehabilitation and the promotion of human values was widely recognized by observers.

A professional rebirth after prison

Following his release, Eugène Atigan chose to rebuild his career. In 2018, he made a comeback in the audiovisual and cultural sector with the launch of Le Super Cabaret, a program that combined variety shows, debates, and the promotion of Togolese artists.

This new venture allowed him to reconnect with his audience and continue his lifelong mission of showcasing national culture. His return was seen as a symbol of exceptional resilience and a determination to move forward despite past hardships.

Prior to his death, he held the position of director of programs and broadcasting at Pyramide TV, where he continued to contribute his expertise to the development of the Togolese media landscape.

An enduring legacy

Eugène Atigan leaves behind the legacy of a man deeply passionate about culture, communication, and the transmission of knowledge. His journey, defined by great success, trials, and ultimate rebirth, will remain etched in the collective memory of the nation.

Through his broadcasts, his support for artists, and his role as a trainer for younger generations, he made a lasting contribution to the growth of media and culture in Togo.

His passing has sparked deep emotion across the cultural and media industries. Family, friends, colleagues, artists, and viewers are today honoring the memory of a man who devoted his life to making Togolese culture shine.
