UN Security Council condemns terror attacks in Mali

The United Nations Security Council has issued a strong condemnation of the terrorist attacks that struck multiple regions in Mali on April 25 and May 6, resulting in casualties and injuries. In a formal statement, the Council described these acts as “heinous and cowardly”, emphasizing that terrorism in all its forms remains one of the most serious threats to international peace and security.

The 15-member body called for the immediate prosecution of all individuals involved in planning, financing, and executing these attacks. Their statement reiterated that terrorism is a criminal act, devoid of justification regardless of motivation, location, timing, or perpetrator.

Global response to counter terrorism

The Council underscored that all nations must work together to combat terrorism using every available means, in strict adherence to the UN Charter and international law. These efforts are critical to safeguarding global peace and security against the persistent menace of terrorist violence.

In reinforcing their stance, Council members reaffirmed their commitment to holding accountable not only the attackers but also those who provide support, resources, or safe havens to terrorist networks.

Mali’s fight against extremism

The recent surge in terror-related violence has placed additional strain on Mali’s already fragile security situation. The attacks, which targeted both military and civilian areas, highlight the persistent challenge posed by extremist groups operating across the Sahel region.

International observers stress the importance of coordinated regional and global action to dismantle terrorist infrastructures and prevent future attacks. The Security Council’s condemnation sends a clear message: the international community stands united against terrorism in all its manifestations.
