Violent pitch invasions mar Ligue 1 finale in Nantes and Nice
Fans in masks storm the field • chaos erupts as supporters express frustration
The final whistle didn’t end the drama
What was supposed to be a celebratory last day of the Ligue 1 season turned into a spectacle of frustration and chaos. Both FC Nantes and OGC Nice saw their matches abandoned after supporters stormed the pitch, leaving officials scrambling to restore order and condemning the unacceptable behavior.
Nantes: A night of bitter goodbyes
At the Stade de la Beaujoire, the atmosphere was already charged as FC Nantes faced Toulouse knowing their relegation to Ligue 2 was confirmed. The club had planned a touching tribute to coach Vahid Halilhodzic, who was ending his tenure after failing to keep the team in the top flight.
Players and staff lined up to honor the 74-year-old coach, whose emotional smile stood in stark contrast to the scenes that unfolded shortly after. With the match just 22 minutes old, dozens of Nantes supporters wearing masks and wielding smoke bombs stormed the pitch, confronting club officials in protest.
Referee Stéphanie Frappart immediately halted play and sent players to the locker rooms. The match was later abandoned for security reasons. Halilhodzic, visibly shaken, remained on the sidelines, shouting at the supporters who approached him, barely restrained by security.
France’s sports minister weighs in
The Minister of Sports issued a firm statement: “The scenes of violence that occurred moments ago are unacceptable and have no place in sports or our Republic. I strongly condemn these actions and stand in solidarity with the players and supporters who attended peacefully.” The decision to abandon the match, made by local authorities, was deemed necessary.
Nice: Frustration boils over after dismal draw
Meanwhile, in Nice, the frustration of the fans reached boiling point after their team’s 0-0 draw against Metz confirmed their spot in the relegation playoffs against Saint-Étienne. With fans already furious over the team’s poor performance, the final whistle signaled the end of patience.
Supporters in masks stormed the Allianz Riviera, setting off smoke bombs and causing chaos. Local authorities swiftly condemned the “strongly condemned” behavior of the ultras, and the match was abandoned as a precaution.
Club president Jean-Pierre Rivère expressed his regret, acknowledging the “huge disappointment” of the season’s outcome. “Everyone is hurting, there’s a lot of bitterness and anger, but the season isn’t over yet. We still have two difficult matches ahead, and we must fight to stay in Ligue 1.”
What’s next for the clubs?
Both Nantes and Nice now face uncertain futures. The abandoned matches will likely be rescheduled or played behind closed doors as authorities investigate the incidents. For Nice, the focus has shifted entirely from the upcoming Coupe de France final against Lens to survival in Ligue 1.
“The priority is no longer the Coupe de France final. Our only ambition now is to stay in Ligue 1.” Rivère stated.
The chaos has left fans, players, and officials alike questioning the future of fan behavior in French football.
