The Minister of Health and Public Hygiene, Doctor Colonel-Major Garba Hakimi, led a landmark ceremony on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, at the Hôpital Général de Référence in Niamey. The event marked the 50th anniversary of the Chinese medical team’s presence in Niger, honoring five decades of continuous support, expertise, and dedication to the health of the Nigerien people.
During the proceedings, Doctor Colonel-Major Garba Hakimi praised the discipline and high level of professionalism maintained by the Chinese medical staff. Their collaboration with local practitioners has significantly bolstered the capacity of healthcare facilities and expanded medical access across Niger. A highlight of the celebration was the official handover of a donation from the Chinese government valued at approximately 99,244,000 francs. This contribution, consisting of essential medicines and medical supplies, is destined for the HGR. The Minister noted that the ongoing mission reflects a shared commitment to improving living standards and strengthening the bonds of solidarity between the two nations.
The Health Minister further explained that the impact of this medical cooperation is evident in various sectors, including direct patient care, the training of healthcare workers, the transfer of specialized skills, and the introduction of innovative medical technologies. These efforts have resulted in quality treatment for thousands of citizens. Paying tribute to the People’s Republic of China, he described the country as a long-standing strategic partner that consistently supports Niger’s healthcare priorities. He expressed his hope that this fruitful relationship would continue to evolve and deliver even more substantial benefits for the population in the future.
The Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Niger, H.E. Lyu Guinjun, provided historical context, noting that for 50 years, the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region has deployed nearly 800 highly skilled doctors and nurses to Niger. Working alongside their Nigerien counterparts, these “ambassadors in white coats” have treated nearly 1.8 million patients. The Ambassador also mentioned President Xi Jinping’s vision for a global community of health, which has gained international support. He added that China’s recently adopted 15th five-year plan will create fresh avenues for deepening health coordination with Niger.
Mr. Du Zhenzong, representing the Health Commission of the Guangxi region, emphasized that these medical teams serve as vital messengers of friendship between China and Africa. Over the half-century of cooperation, they have provided care to over 2.3 million people and mentored more than 45,000 health professionals. This enduring legacy has been instrumental in developing Niger’s healthcare infrastructure and enhancing the overall well-being of its citizens.
The Director General of the Hôpital Général de Référence in Niamey, Mr. Daou Mamane, welcomed the guests and expressed gratitude for the significant contributions of the Chinese teams. He noted that the donation of pharmaceuticals is a major boost for both his institution and the wider Nigerien health system. He assured the benefactors that the supplies would be managed strictly according to established medical protocols to benefit the public.
