The director general of the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Jean Kaseya, reported having a “constructive” discussion with French health minister Stéphanie Rist following the confirmation of an imported case of Ebola virus disease caused by the Bundibugyo strain on French soil.
Kaseya commended the assurance from France that no travel restrictions would be imposed in connection with this case.
The patient is a Congolese humanitarian physician who took part in the Ebola response in Ituri on behalf of the NGO ALIMA. He tested positive after arriving in France, where he normally resides, according to an official communication. This marks the first confirmed case of the disease on French territory.
Kaseya stressed that the Africa CDC, the World Health Organization, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, as well as French and Congolese authorities, remain fully committed to containing the outbreak, protecting communities, and advancing a coordinated response at both continental and global levels.
