Algeria and Niger forge stronger hydrocarbon ties

Mohamed Arkab, Algeria’s Minister of State and Minister of Hydrocarbons, engaged in a videoconference discussion on Sunday with Hamadou Tini, the Minister of Petroleum for the Republic of Niger. The talks centered on advancing bilateral cooperation within the vital hydrocarbon sector, according to a statement from the ministry.

This significant meeting, attended by senior officials from both nations’ ministries, provided an opportunity to review the recent operational endeavors of the Sonatrach group in the Republic of Niger. Particular attention was given to activities at the Kafra oil block, following the signing of the Algerian-Nigerien memorandum of understanding on hydrocarbons on March 24, 2026. This agreement was established on the sidelines of the second session of the Algerian-Nigerien Grand Joint Cooperation Commission, co-chaired by Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb and his Nigerien counterpart, Ali Lamine Zeine.

Discussions further encompassed an assessment of the progress made in the development and exploration work at the Kafra block. Officials also monitored the coordination efforts between the Sonatrach group, through its subsidiary Sonatrach International Production and Exploration Corporation (SIPEX), and the Nigerien Petroleum Company (SONIDEP).

During the session, both parties underscored the critical importance of integrating Nigerien enterprises and companies into energy projects. This strategic inclusion aims to promote local content and bolster economic development across Niger, the statement added.

The two delegations also explored avenues for deepening cooperation in key areas such as training, technology transfer, and the exchange of specialized expertise. This includes organizing targeted training programs for executives and technical personnel, alongside fostering partnerships between national companies from both countries, including Sonatrach, SONIDEP, and Naftal. Specific focus areas for these collaborations include the transport, storage, distribution, and securing of petroleum product supply chains, crucial for African economy news.

Concluding the meeting, both ministers reiterated their shared dedication to continuously strengthening bilateral cooperation in the hydrocarbon sector.
