Bénin: Patrice Talon sworn in as first Senate president, vows unity

Patrice Talon has officially taken the helm of the Bénin Senate for its inaugural term from 2026 to 2031, delivering a landmark address following his election as the chamber’s first-ever president.

An inauguration rooted in national unity

In his inaugural speech before the Senate’s senior member and all newly elected senators, Talon expressed deep gratitude to his colleagues for entrusting him with the responsibility of leading the upper house. He highlighted the spirit of harmony that characterized the institution’s formation process, underscoring its importance in fostering a cohesive legislative environment.

Building a united and purposeful Senate

Talon called for the cultivation of a strong collective dynamic within the Senate, one driven by accountability, dignity, and an unwavering commitment to the nation’s highest interests. Addressing past criticisms regarding perceived divisions during his two presidential terms, Talon pledged to dedicate this new mandate to strengthening national unity, political stability, peace, and democratic governance in Bénin. He urged his fellow senators to actively uphold these shared values and work collaboratively toward their realization.

Leadership and institutional transition

The newly elected Senate leadership team includes Louis Vlavonou—former President of the National Assembly—as Vice President, alongside Alassane Seidou as Rapporteur and Adidjatou Mathys as Deputy Rapporteur. Talon will guide this historic first term, marking a pivotal moment in the country’s institutional evolution.
