Former Paris Saint-Germain academy player and French youth international Arthur Zagré has made the bold decision to switch his sporting allegiance to Burkina Faso. The 24-year-old left-back, who has represented France at U18 and U19 levels (23 caps, 2 goals), will now don the national colors of his ancestral homeland, according to sources close to the Burkina Faso national team.
With a versatile skill set that allows him to play higher in the defensive line or even as a defensive midfielder, Zagré has been a regular fixture at Excelsior Rotterdam in the Eredivisie. This season, he has contributed 3 goals and 2 assists, showcasing his attacking prowess from the left flank. His move to the Burkina Faso squad comes as they prepare for upcoming friendly matches in June against Belarus and Russia, under the guidance of head coach Amir Abdou.
From PSG to Ligue 1 and beyond
Arthur Zagré’s football journey began in the prestigious Paris Saint-Germain academy, where he honed his skills before making his Ligue 1 debut during the 2019-2020 season. His breakthrough came in the third matchday, catching many by surprise when he secured a move to AS Monaco shortly after. However, his path to regular first-team football was not straightforward.
After a loan spell at Dijon, followed by stints at Utrecht and Excelsior Rotterdam, Zagré found his footing in Rotterdam. Standing at just 1.68 meters tall, his powerful left foot and dynamic playing style have made him a valuable asset in the Eredivisie. Now, as his contract with Excelsior Rotterdam nears its June expiration, the versatile left-back is set to embark on a new chapter with the Burkina Faso national team, where he aims to bring his experience and flair to the Étalons’ lineup.
