Benin injects billions in school reforms for 2026 academic year

As the 2026-2027 school year approaches, Benin’s government has rolled out sweeping educational reforms backed by a 30 billion FCFA investment. The initiative, approved during a cabinet meeting, targets social equity and modernized learning environments across all levels of education.

Boosting school attendance with expanded nutrition programs

The cornerstone of this plan is the nationwide expansion of school feeding programs. The initiative now reaches 1.9 million primary school children, up from 1.4 million previously, ensuring daily hot meals for vulnerable students in rural and peri-urban areas. This move aims to curb dropout rates and improve concentration.

In parallel, a special contingency plan targets border regions facing security challenges. The strategy includes infrastructure upgrades and tailored support for teachers and students in these areas to ensure uninterrupted learning.

Gender equality and technical training take center stage

The government is prioritizing gender parity in secondary education, particularly in technical and vocational streams. Key measures include:

• Full tuition waivers for all female students enrolled in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programs.
• 12,000 new desks distributed to General Education Colleges (CEG) to accommodate rising enrollment.
• Renovations of girls’ high schools nationwide to create safer, more conducive learning spaces.

University sector receives major upgrades

Higher education is getting a substantial financial boost, with scholarships increasing by up to 49% depending on the field of study. Additional allocations include enhanced back-to-school grants and revised excellence bursaries for students pursuing studies abroad.

Transportation on campuses is being revolutionized with 63 new buses serving the four public universities: Abomey-Calavi, Parakou, UNA Kétou, and UNSTIM Abomey. These buses will operate on multiple intercity routes to ease mobility for students.

A comprehensive campus revitalization program is also underway, focusing on:

• Upgrading university restaurants and infirmaries with modern equipment.
• Deploying qualified medical and catering staff.
• Automatically awarding scholarships to all first-year university students with severe disabilities.
