The Republic of Burundi has once again declared its unreserved and unwavering commitment to Morocco’s full sovereignty over its entire territory. This significant declaration emerged from discussions held in Rabat on Friday, June 19, 2026, between Burundian Foreign Minister Edouard Bizimana and his Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita, during a productive working visit to the Kingdom.

A joint communiqué, issued following their high-level meeting, underscored Bujumbura’s renewed endorsement of the autonomy plan proposed by Morocco. Burundi firmly positions this initiative as the sole viable and pragmatic pathway to resolve the long-standing regional dispute. Furthermore, Burundi expressed its strong backing for the ongoing efforts under the auspices of the United Nations, aimed at advancing negotiations rooted in this Moroccan proposal.

Renewed diplomatic backing for the Sahara

This resolute stance by Burundi is consistent with the growing wave of African support Morocco has garnered concerning its national cause. Notably, Burundi commended the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797. This resolution, in Burundi’s view, solidifies the autonomy plan under Moroccan sovereignty as the foundational framework for achieving a just, enduring, and mutually acceptable political resolution. This reaffirmation highlights a significant development in African politics, as Morocco continues its dedicated diplomatic endeavors to broaden and strengthen international support for its strategic initiative across the continent.
