‘Cameroon is on autopilot, the country has stalled,’ says Mustapha Ngouana

For Mustapha Ngouana, Cameroon has grown accustomed to unfulfilled promises and broken commitments.

Appearing on the programme ‘Droit de réponse,’ Mustapha Ngouana painted a picture of a recurring pattern of unmet promises in Cameroon.

“The president of the Republic of Cameroon has repeatedly made decisions whose deadlines have never been met. Let us take a few examples. For the Africa Cup of Nations, the president said it would take place on the announced date; that did not happen. The president had 50 years to prepare the 50th anniversary of reunification; it was supposed to be celebrated in 2011, but it happened in 2014,” Mustapha Ngouana wrote during the show.

The debate’s theme was “Broken trust: public opinion faced with unkept promises.” Mustapha Ngouana addressed this topic by highlighting what he called “permanent drift” in the head of state’s governance.

“I believe the president is in permanent drift in his governance. Our country is at a standstill. When people even speak of poor governance, I think they are being gentle; it is actually non-governance. Cameroon is on autopilot.”
