Cameroon senate president calls for tougher action against sexual violence and femicides

At the opening of the second ordinary session of the Senate on Tuesday in Yaoundé, the upper house president urged the government to step up efforts against child sexual abuse and femicides, calling the situation increasingly alarming.

Addressing lawmakers at the Palais des Congrès in Yaoundé on Tuesday, Senate President Aboubakary Abdoulaye called on the Cameroonian government to intensify the fight against sexual violence targeting children and to clamp down on femicides, which he described as increasingly alarming.

Aboubakary Abdoulaye, who also holds the title of Lamido of Rey Bouba, delivered a strong plea for firmer state action against child sexual abuse and the killing of women in Cameroon.

Speaking at the start of the second ordinary session of the Senate in Yaoundé, in the presence of Prime Minister Joseph Dion Ngute, the Speaker of the National Assembly, and several cabinet members, he condemned acts that gravely undermine the dignity, integrity, and lives of victims.

« Sexual abuse against women and children, as well as acts of femicide, must be confronted with unwavering resolve », he stated, urging authorities to put an end to such violence.

This strong stance comes at a time of deep national emotion following the alleged rape of a three-year-old girl in Yaoundé. The case sparked protests and widespread outrage, reigniting the debate on child protection and the need for stronger preventive and punitive measures against gender-based violence.
