Canary Islands Parliament honors Moroccan consul’s diplomatic work
Astrid Pérez, President of the Canary Islands Parliament, received Moroccan Consul General Fatiha El Kamouri this Wednesday to mark the conclusion of her four-year mandate leading the consular representation in the archipelago.
During their meeting, Pérez expressed deep gratitude for El Kamouri’s outstanding contributions in strengthening institutional relations between the Canary Islands and Morocco. She also wished her colleague success in her upcoming professional endeavors.
Fatiha El Kamouri, of Sahrawi origin, arrived in the Canary Islands in 2022 after serving six years as Morocco’s consul in Bilbao. During her tenure there, she played a pivotal role in fostering institutional relations and supporting the Moroccan community residing in the islands.
The outgoing consul’s tenure has significantly enhanced cooperation between the Canary Islands government—led by Fernando Clavijo—and Morocco. Her work has been instrumental in aligning the archipelago’s policies with Spain’s strategic interests in North Africa.
Clavijo’s administration has embraced Morocco’s autonomy initiative for Western Sahara, reflecting a broader alignment with Spanish foreign policy. This strategic partnership extends beyond diplomatic gestures, addressing critical security concerns and unlocking substantial economic opportunities for both regions.
The collaboration spans key sectors including water desalination, infrastructure management, and technological innovation—areas where the Canary Islands possess valuable expertise. High-level exchanges, such as the recent visit by a delegation from Souss-Massa to Las Palmas, underscore the growing economic ties between the two regions.
These efforts have positioned the Canary Islands as a natural partner in Morocco’s development plans, moving beyond past divisions to foster mutual growth and stability. The enhanced cooperation promises lasting benefits for both communities.
