CEDEAO and un women launch green economy gender program in west africa

Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire – A landmark regional initiative has been approved in Abidjan, bringing together the ECOWAS Centre for Gender Development (CCDG), UN Women, and key ECOWAS agencies. The newly validated program integrates gender equality, climate action, and green economy strategies, marking a significant step toward sustainable development in West Africa.

The two-day workshop, held on 15–16 May 2026 at the ECOWAS Resident Representation in Côte d’Ivoire, focused on finalizing a strategic framework and operational roadmap for implementation. The program aims to align regional efforts with member states’ priorities, addressing gender disparities, climate resilience, and ecological transition while mobilizing funding for the ECOWAS Gender and Climate Action Plan.

Empowering women and youth through green transition

Speaking at the closing session, Sandra Oulaté Fattoh, Director of the CCDG, highlighted the dual nature of ecological transition—posing challenges while unlocking opportunities for women and young girls across West Africa. She emphasized the need for policies that foster inclusion, ensuring no segment of society is left behind in the shift toward sustainability.

Adjaratou Fatou Ndiaye, UN Women’s Resident Representative in Côte d’Ivoire, described the initiative as a pivotal moment where political commitments are translating into tangible action. She stressed that the program’s success hinges on integrating gender perspectives into climate and economic policies, ensuring real impact on the ground.

Dr. Kalilou Sylla, ECOWAS Commissioner for Economic Affairs and Agriculture, reinforced this vision, calling for an inclusive green transition that creates meaningful opportunities for women and youth. He underscored the importance of equitable access to resources, skills, and decision-making roles to drive sustainable change.

Next steps: adoption and implementation

The finalized program document is slated for adoption during a working session scheduled from 29 June to 6 July 2026 in Lomé, Togo. This milestone will set the stage for coordinated regional action, aligning policies, funding mechanisms, and grassroots initiatives to advance gender equality and environmental sustainability across ECOWAS member states.
