Chad government offers formal apology to judges amid ongoing dialogue

The Chadian government has issued a formal apology to the country’s magistrates, marking a significant step toward institutional reconciliation following an extraordinary general assembly of the SMT and SYAMAT unions.

On May 26, 2026, representatives from both judicial unions convened at the N’Djamena Palace of Justice to set a ten-day agenda for addressing key concerns. Later that same day, the Prime Minister met with union delegates, joined by the Minister of Justice and Human Rights and the First President of the Supreme Court. During the meeting, the Prime Minister conveyed the government’s official apology and emphasized the need to strengthen cooperation among state institutions.

The following day, May 27, 2026, the unions engaged in separate discussions with the Minister of Justice and Human Rights, followed by a joint session with the Minister of Public Security and Immigration—again in the presence of the Supreme Court’s top official. These talks were focused on achieving a peaceful and mutually agreeable resolution.

The Minister of Public Security also reiterated the government’s formal apology to the magistrates. In response, the unions acknowledged the gesture and commended the leadership’s commitment to constructive dialogue and conflict resolution.
