Côte d’Ivoire backs Morocco’s autonomy plan for western Sahara

The Côte d’Ivoire has once again expressed its unwavering support for Morocco‘s Autonomy Plan during the recent UN C24 regional seminar held in Managua, Nicaragua. The West African nation reaffirmed its commitment to a lasting resolution of the regional dispute surrounding the Western Sahara.

In its address to the forum, the Ivorian delegation highlighted that the Moroccan Initiative, backed by over 130 countries—including three permanent members of the UN Security Council—aligns with international law, the UN Charter, and relevant resolutions. This endorsement underscores the plan’s legitimacy and viability as a framework for ending the decades-long conflict.

The delegation emphasized that the UN Security Council Resolution 2797, adopted in 2025, validates the initiative’s relevance. It noted that the plan uniquely addresses the specific needs of the Western Sahara population by empowering them to actively shape the region’s political and socio-economic landscape. This includes granting residents the right to elect local and national representatives through democratic processes within the Moroccan Kingdom.

In the economic sphere, the Ivorian delegation pointed out the tangible benefits of the New Development Model launched in 2015. The plan has channeled substantial investments into the southern provinces, significantly boosting living standards and the Human Development Index in the region. These advancements reflect Morocco’s dedication to fostering sustainable progress and shared prosperity in the area.

The delegation also commended Morocco’s efforts in advancing human rights, citing the strengthened role of regional commissions of the National Human Rights Council in Laâyoune and Dakhla. Additionally, collaboration with the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights has further solidified the kingdom’s commitment to upholding fundamental freedoms and dignity for all residents.

In concluding its remarks, the Côte d’Ivoire praised Morocco’s relentless pursuit of a mutually acceptable solution. The delegation underscored that these comprehensive measures underscore the credibility and viability of the Autonomy Plan, which grants the people of Western Sahara broad rights and responsibilities in their governance and development.
