Gabon: CLR party ignites mobilization one year before its pivotal congress

In Libreville this past weekend, senior figures from the Centre des Libéraux Réformateurs (CLR) officially initiated a comprehensive relaunch of the party’s activities. With its next congress scheduled in just one year, the political organization, founded by Jean-Boniface Assélé, is set on a path to restructure, invigorate its members, and unequivocally reiterate its backing for President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema.

As Gabon approaches significant political milestones within the Ve République, the Centre des Libéraux Réformateurs (CLR) is determined to reclaim its prominent position in the national political arena. Leaders of the party convened an expanded steering committee meeting at the Cabaret des Artistes, located in Libreville’s 5th arrondissement, laying the groundwork for a revitalized organizational dynamic.

A relaunch focused on the 2027 congress

Addressing the assembled activists and officials, CLR President Jean-Boniface Assélé directly confronted numerous inquiries regarding the future trajectory of his political movement. He firmly dismissed criticisms suggesting the party’s decline or imminent disappearance, with the former minister asserting his categorical stance. « Many, as is often the case, claimed the CLR was defunct, » he declared, emphasizing that the substantial turnout at the gathering served as compelling evidence to the contrary.

Central to the discussions was the meticulous preparation for the party’s upcoming congress, slated to take place in a year. The CLR leadership views this event as crucial for redefining the party’s strategic directions and strengthening its presence across the entire national territory. With this objective in mind, Jean-Boniface Assélé urged members to engage in an unsparing assessment of the party’s operations and the challenges it faces. « This meeting will allow us to critically examine the path ahead and, crucially, under what conditions we will proceed, » he underscored.

To support this initiative, a dedicated reflection committee has been established, tasked with proposing the modalities for the party’s resurgence. The CLR President also announced the forthcoming appointment of new officials, aiming to inject fresh energy into the party’s internal structures.

The CLR asserts its role during the Transition

The gathering also featured the presentation of the 2024-2025 activity report. This document detailed the CLR’s involvement in key phases of Gabon’s political Transition, as well as its participation in the referendum and presidential campaigns. Through this comprehensive review, the political formation sought to highlight its deep engagement in the institutional transformations initiated since August 30, 2023, and its close alignment with the policies championed by the President of the Republic.

At a time when numerous political parties are seeking to redefine their positions within Gabon’s evolving political landscape, the CLR clearly demonstrates its ambition to remain an influential participant in public discourse. The challenge now lies in translating this commitment to a relaunch into a tangible, militant dynamic capable of making an impact in future electoral contests and contributing to the consolidation of the Ve République.
