Gabon: MGG urges immediate release of detained opposition leader

The Movement for the Greatness of Gabon (MGG), led by President Christian Mermance N’nang Nsome, has publicly demanded the unconditional release of Alain-Claude Bilie-By-Nzé, former Prime Minister and current leader of the opposition coalition Ensemble Pour le Gabon (EPG). Bilie-By-Nzé has been held at the Libreville Central Prison since April 2026 on allegations of embezzling five million CFA francs.

In a strongly worded statement, the MGG framed its appeal as a defense of Gabonese democracy and the rule of law, warning that the current judicial process risks undermining the democratic gains secured through years of political struggle. The party, which supports President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguéma, emphasized that its stance is not about partisan loyalty but about upholding justice for all citizens.

Calling for judicial fairness and national accountability

Christian Mermance N’nang Nsome made it clear that his advocacy stems from a personal conviction shaped by his own seven-month detention without trial—an experience he describes as both unlawful and deeply traumatic. He stressed that magistrates must apply the law impartially in Bilie-By-Nzé’s case, just as they eventually did in his own release, rather than yielding to political pressure.

Reflecting on the long-term impact of his imprisonment, N’nang Nsome spoke of irreversible personal and financial losses, including lasting health consequences. Despite the risks of speaking out in a climate where dissent is often labeled a threat to public order, he vowed not to remain silent—even if it makes him a target. “Yesterday it was me. Today it is Bilie-By-Nzé. Who will be next?” he cautioned, urging the public to recognize the pattern of arbitrary detentions.

Defending democratic values in a shifting political landscape

The MGG’s position also highlights concerns over a new political party law that threatens dissolution for up to 102 opposition formations. N’nang Nsome warned that such measures could silence dissent and further erode democratic freedoms in Gabon. By demanding Bilie-By-Nzé’s release, the party is signaling its commitment to protecting not just individual rights, but the integrity of Gabon’s political system as a whole.

His message is unambiguous: justice must prevail, regardless of political affiliation.
