Christian Sedat, the German Ambassador to Cameroon, recently paid a courtesy visit to Archbishop Samuel Kleda, the Metropolitan Archbishop of Douala, on Monday, June 30, 2026. Their discussions centered on the recent historic visit of Pope Leo XIV to Cameroon.
The German diplomat’s presence at the Bishopric of Douala’s Saint Peter and Paul Cathedral marked a significant diplomatic engagement. Ambassador Christian Sedat was warmly received by Archbishop Samuel Kleda, initiating a tour of the premises.
Under the guidance of the Chancellor of the Archdiocese of Douala, Ambassador Sedat also explored the cathedral, which is commemorating its 70th anniversary this year. The German diplomatic representation in Cameroon later clarified the essence of this courtesy call via an official statement on its social media platform.
Strengthening the enduring bonds between Germany, Cameroon, and the Catholic Church
“During a visit to Douala, Ambassador Christian Sedat had the distinct privilege of meeting His Excellency Mr. Samuel Kleda, Archbishop of Douala. They engaged in an open and fruitful discussion regarding the vital role of religious leaders within society, particularly in light of the Pope’s historic visit to Cameroon. This meeting underscores the robust connections that unite Germany, Cameroon, and the Catholic Church. Germany remains actively engaged on the ground, listening and fostering dialogue across the entire nation,” the statement affirmed, highlighting a key aspect of African politics in English-speaking diplomatic circles.
Christian Sedat is an experienced German diplomat currently serving as the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Cameroon. Based in Yaoundé, he officially assumed his duties in July 2025. His extensive career includes significant roles within the central services of the German Foreign Ministry and various diplomatic postings worldwide, notably in South Sudan from 2023 to 2025.
Supporting local social initiatives and development cooperation
Prior to his appointment in Cameroon, Ambassador Sedat served as Germany’s Ambassador in Juba. His career also includes postings in the United States and the United Kingdom from 2009 to 2013, where he worked at the German Embassies in London and Washington D.C. From 2005 to 2008, he held the position of Deputy Head of Mission at the German Embassy in Nouakchott, Mauritania.
Since his arrival at the German Embassy in Yaoundé, Christian Sedat has been actively spearheading key initiatives within German-Cameroonian cooperation. His efforts are primarily focused on enhancing economic relations and fostering development cooperation. He also oversees sensitive cultural dialogues, particularly those concerning cultural and heritage assets from the colonial era. Furthermore, his work includes providing crucial support for local social projects, such as public health micro-initiatives, contributing to African economy news and community well-being.
