The inaugural group of Burkinabè pilgrims touched down at Ouagadougou’s international airport on June 2, 2026, marking the start of the return phase for the Hadj 2026 pilgrimage. A total of 342 faithful travelers disembarked, greeted by overjoyed relatives and government officials, signaling the successful conclusion of their spiritual journey in Islam’s holy sites.
Clad in traditional attire, the pilgrims radiated happiness and fulfillment after completing the fifth pillar of Islam. Among them was Hadja Karidja Karambiri/Koné, whose emotions were palpable as she stepped off the plane. Her words reflected the collective sentiment of the group:
“The experience in Mecca was truly remarkable. As a first-time pilgrim, I feel deeply fulfilled and grateful. Everything unfolded flawlessly… We prayed fervently for the restoration of peace and social cohesion across Burkina Faso.”
While refraining from releasing a full assessment, Saïdou Sankara, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Territorial Administration and Mobility, conveyed the government’s satisfaction with the pilgrimage’s smooth execution. No major incidents were reported during this edition, and he extended the state’s heartfelt appreciation to the returning faithful.
Speaking on behalf of the Minister of State, Sankara emphasized the significance of this spiritual milestone:
“Tonight, we share a message of joy and gratitude as we welcome our brothers and sisters back home, safe and sound after fulfilling their religious duty. We came to honor them in person and convey our warmest congratulations. May this journey strengthen their faith and may all prayers offered in Mecca be answered—for their families and for our beloved nation.”

El Hadj Oumarou Zoungrana, representing the Federation of Islamic Associations of Burkina (FAIB), praised the impeccable organization of the pilgrimage. He commended the steering committee for ensuring a seamless experience for all participants. With the initial flight’s success, the airlift operations will continue uninterrupted to bring home the remaining Burkinabè pilgrims under the watchful coordination of authorities and organizers.
