Hull City AFC has made a statement of intent ahead of their Premier League return by completing the signing of 21-year-old central defender Nobel Mendy from LaLiga side Rayo Vallecano. The Tigers have agreed a long-term contract with the Senegalese international, just days after securing promotion to English football’s top flight.

The transfer represents a new club record in terms of transfer fees paid, eclipsing the previous benchmark set earlier this month by goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis, who arrived from Olympiacos for more than £20 million (excluding add-ons). While Hull City has not disclosed the exact financial terms of Mendy’s move, club sources confirm the deal surpasses the Tzolakis transaction.

Mendy expressed his excitement at joining Hull City, revealing his ambition to test himself against the world’s best competition. Speaking to the club’s official channels after the announcement, the young defender couldn’t hide his pride: “I’m extremely happy to be here and very proud to join Hull City.”

He continued: “I’m an athletic player who plays as a defender with passion. I love the game and enjoy making clean, aggressive exits when needed. Playing in the Premier League has been my dream since childhood, and now I’m ready to embrace this challenge.”

A defender with continental experience

Despite his young age, Mendy arrives in East Yorkshire with significant high-level experience, including multiple appearances in European finals. During his single LaLiga season with Rayo Vallecano, he made 28 appearances and contributed two goals, demonstrating his attacking threat from the defensive line.

Remarkably, this was Mendy’s second consecutive year reaching the UEFA Europa Conference League final, having suffered defeat with Rayo Vallecano against Crystal Palace this season. The previous campaign saw him part of the Real Betis squad that reached the tournament final, ultimately falling to London rivals Chelsea. His encounters with top English clubs in European competition have given him valuable insight into the Premier League’s demands.

Rising star from Senegal’s national team

Mendy has already begun establishing himself on the international stage with Senegal’s senior national team. The defender earned his first senior cap in March during a match against Gambia, further cementing his reputation among West Africa’s most promising defensive talents.

His arrival marks Hull City’s eighth summer signing following their promotion to the Premier League. The Tigers are now finalizing preparations for their top-flight campaign, with their opening fixture against Manchester United scheduled for August 22 at the MKM Stadium.
