The Beninese Republic’s law enforcement agencies are stepping up efforts to dismantle transnational criminal networks and track fugitives crossing borders. Their mission? To ensure Benin does not become a safe haven for individuals wanted by international justice. Aligned with the Judicial Police Directorate, the BCN-INTERPOL Cotonou executed a coordinated operation from April 13 to 19, 2026, resulting in the capture of three high-profile fugitives sought by multiple countries.
Three fugitives intercepted in targeted operations
A Nigerian national, sought by his country’s authorities for alleged involvement in multiple murders in Lagos between 2023 and 2024, was arrested in Cotonou on April 15. The fugitive, whose escape had been widely publicized by Lagos State Police, was located hiding in a hotel in the capital.
On the same day, another operation led to the detention at Bernardin Gantin International Airport of a suspect wanted by U.S. authorities in a major fraud case. The individual had fled the United States and entered Benin, attempting to evade American justice.
Days later, on April 19, a French national was arrested in Cotonou for alleged involvement in transnational organized crime. The suspect had established multiple false identities to avoid detection, but prolonged discreet surveillance by specialized police units eventually led to his capture.
Extradition underway for international fugitives
Following the arrests, the Nigerian fugitive was handed over to his country’s authorities in accordance with the ECOWAS Police Criminal Cooperation Agreement. Meanwhile, extradition proceedings for the other suspects are ongoing, ensuring they face justice in their respective countries.
Benin reinforces commitment to fighting transnational crime
Through these targeted operations and the subsequent extraditions, Benin’s law enforcement demonstrates its unwavering commitment to combating transnational organized crime. The country reaffirms its dedication to international police cooperation and its refusal to provide sanctuary to international criminals, regardless of their origin or the crimes they are accused of.
