Julian Alvarez to Barcelona? Pedri speaks out as PSG watch closely

The Paris Saint-Germain have not given up on the Julian Alvarez trail, a path they first explored two years ago before he left Manchester City for Atletico Madrid. But this time, it may be Barcelona who thwart PSG’s plans – and Pedri, the Blaugrana midfielder, is more than happy about it.

The Julian Alvarez saga has been a hot topic in the early weeks of the summer transfer window, which officially opened on June 15 and closes on September 1. The 26-year-old Argentine international is currently playing in his second World Cup with Argentina, this time on American soil. Although he remains under contract with Atletico Madrid until 2030, the Colchoneros striker does not plan to return to the Spanish capital after the 2026 World Cup concludes.

“I think what’s best for everyone is a transfer”

On Monday, Argentina secured their spot in the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup by defeating Austria 2-0. In the mixed zone, Julian Alvarez publicly expressed his desire to leave, hinting that he wants to join Barcelona. “This is not the time to talk about it, but I can’t hide either; I try to be an honest person. I have spoken with the people at Atletico Madrid, and I think what’s best for everyone is a transfer. I want to fulfill my dream.”

“I hope this transfer can happen, and if so, then great”

This is bad news for PSG, who – as in the summer of 2024 before his move to Atletico Madrid – have kept a close watch on the Rojiblanco striker’s situation. Meanwhile, at Barcelona, the red carpet is already being rolled out for Julian Alvarez. One need only look at the words of Pedri during his interview: “A transfer of Julian Alvarez to Barcelona? I think a lot of things need to fall into place for that to happen. I don’t want to meddle in the club’s affairs or the player’s. It’s true that I love Julian as a player, and I’ve always said I want the best players at Barça. I hope this transfer can happen, and if so, then great.” The Barcelona midfielder has fired the starting gun; now it remains to be seen whether Paris Saint-Germain will make a public move or work behind the scenes to tip the scales in their favor in the race to sign Alvarez.
