Mali crisis: un warns of democratic backsliding amid election suspension

Mali crisis: UN raises alarm over suspended elections and civil repression

The United Nations has issued a strong warning about the deteriorating situation in Mali. Volker Türk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, expressed deep concerns over the indefinite suspension of elections and the escalating repression targeting civil society in the country.

In a recent statement, Türk emphasized the gravity of the situation, declaring, “Recent legislative changes threaten to undermine human rights protections in Mali for years to come.” He urged the transitional authorities to take immediate, concrete action by repealing these controversial laws.

Unlimited mandate and crackdown on dissent

In July, General Assimi Goïta, who has led the country since seizing power in 2021, signed into law a controversial measure that effectively grants him an indefinite presidential mandate. This move has effectively closed the door to any democratic elections in the foreseeable future, violating citizens’ fundamental rights to participate in public life, vote, and run for office through free and fair elections. “These legal changes must be repealed without delay, as they flagrantly disregard democratic principles,” Türk stated.

Earlier in May, the transitional government dissolved all political parties, a decision now pending before the Constitutional Court.

Ending the abuse of legal power

Concurrently, the crackdown on civil society and political figures has intensified. Prominent activists and former officials, including anti-corruption campaigner Clément Dembélé and former Prime Minister Choguel Maïga, have been arrested. “The alarming rise in arbitrary detentions, often based on vague accusations of undermining state credibility, is deeply troubling.” Türk warned, calling for the immediate and unconditional release of all detained individuals. He stressed the urgent need to stop the misuse of legal mechanisms to silence dissent.
