Mali joins global higher education summit to shape future learning

The Southern University of Science and Technology’s convention center in Shenzhen, China, became the epicenter of a landmark event on June 6, 2026, as global leaders converged for the World Summit on the Future of Higher Education. Among the key delegates was Mali, represented by Dr. Mamadou Koumaré, Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Management in Bamako and coordinator of the UNESCO International Centre for Higher Education Innovation (UNESCO-ICHEI) partnerships in Malian universities.

The summit brought together policymakers, international organizations, academic institutions, and cutting-edge technology firms to reimagine the intersection of higher education and industry. Its core mission? To forge a dynamic ecosystem that nurtures talent, drives innovation, and aligns academic training with real-world technological demands.

Forging pathways to AI-driven education and skills

Discussions centered on transformative strategies, including:

  • Capacity building through innovative training programs focused on artificial intelligence and its sectoral applications—such as agriculture, commerce, education, and natural sciences.
  • Showcasing success stories from the tech sector to highlight best practices in digital transformation and educational reform.
  • Strengthening the International Institute of Online Education (IIOE) by launching a comprehensive global report and fostering a collaborative ecosystem of partners.

The summit also emphasized the need for joint talent development initiatives between tech industries and higher education institutions. A key outcome was the promotion of AI-driven educational models that prioritize practical skills, lifelong learning, and curricular innovation.

Mali’s commitment to digital and AI advancement in academia

Three leading Malian institutions—the Kurukanfuga University of Bamako, the University of Social Sciences and Management, and the University Pedagogy Institute—have formalized partnerships with UNESCO-ICHEI. These agreements aim to accelerate the integration of digital tools and artificial intelligence into the national higher education framework.

Dr. Koumaré, who leads the IIOE hub uniting these universities, underscored the importance of these collaborations. “These partnerships are not just about technology—they are about equipping the next generation of Malian professionals with the skills to thrive in a rapidly changing world,” he stated during the event.

The UNESCO delegation reaffirmed its dedication to supporting Mali’s higher education sector through targeted investments in human, technical, and technological capacities. Such efforts align with the global push for inclusive, equitable, and quality education—a cornerstone of the Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4).

As the summit concluded, delegates left with a renewed sense of purpose: to turn visionary ideas into actionable plans that will reshape education systems worldwide—and in Mali, where the future of learning is being written today.
