Mauritania seeks Gabon’s support for francophonie leadership bid

Diplomatic ties between Gabon and Mauritania have reached new heights following a high-level meeting in Libreville. During the encounter, Mauritanian Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development, Messouda Bahama Mohamed Laghdaf, delivered a special message from President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani to Gabon’s transitional leader, Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema.

At the heart of the discussion was the deepening of bilateral cooperation, rooted in shared values of solidarity, mutual respect, and joint problem-solving on continental issues. The Mauritanian delegation also took the opportunity to formally endorse their country’s bid for the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie (OIF) secretary-general position.

The candidacy, championed by Dr. Koumba Ba, centers on three core pillars: coherence, balance, and tangible benefits for member states. This strategic vision aims to position the OIF as a more effective and inclusive platform for Francophone nations.

Gabon’s President Oligui Nguema reaffirmed his country’s commitment to consensus-building and inclusive governance—principles he emphasized as vital for Africa’s political and economic progress. The meeting underscores Gabon’s proactive diplomatic approach, which prioritizes expanding African partnerships while championing a Francophonie focused on collective development.
