Morocco and Benin co-chair african atlantic states process meeting in Cotonou

The seventh ministerial session of the African Atlantic States Process (AASP) opened this Monday in Cotonou, with the Kingdom of Morocco and the Republic of Benin jointly leading the proceedings. This high-level gathering aims to deepen collaboration among African nations bordering the Atlantic Ocean while advancing regional integration, in line with His Majesty King Mohammed VI’s vision for a shared Atlantic space characterized by peace, stability, and inclusive prosperity.

Moroccan delegation highlights strategic partnership

Led by Mohamed Methqal, Morocco’s ambassador and director-general of the Moroccan Agency for International Cooperation (AMCI), the Moroccan delegation included Tarik Iziraren, the AASP’s permanent secretary, Rachid Rguibi, Morocco’s ambassador to Benin, and senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccans Residing Abroad.

Key milestones in the African Atlantic States Process

Since its inception in Rabat in June 2022, the AASP has achieved significant progress. A permanent secretariat was established in Rabat, thematic working groups were formed, and a comprehensive action plan was adopted. This agenda prioritizes political dialogue, maritime security, blue economy initiatives, connectivity, energy transition, and marine environmental protection.

Cotonou meeting strengthens regional coordination

Following previous sessions in Rabat, New York, and Praia, the Cotonou gathering represents another critical step in enhancing coordination among member states. The focus remains on fostering sustainable development, improving maritime governance, and promoting mutually beneficial co-development across Africa’s Atlantic coastal regions.
