Morocco underscores commitment to UN peacekeeping efforts

Nasser Bourita, Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates, welcomed UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix in Rabat on Monday. This marks Lacroix’s second official visit to the kingdom.

Discussions focused on Morocco’s significant and exemplary contributions to United Nations peacekeeping operations.

Morocco’s role stems from a royal strategic vision grounded in a longstanding commitment to UN peacekeeping that dates back to 1960.

Currently ranked ninth among top troop-contributing countries to UN peacekeeping missions, Morocco chairs the UN Peacebuilding Commission for 2026 and coordinates the Non-Aligned Movement on peacekeeping issues — a reflection of the international trust it commands regarding global peace and security.

Lacroix’s visit comes amid major UN reform initiatives, including “UN 80” to streamline the Secretariat and a strategic review of all peacekeeping operations and the international peace and security architecture — aimed at restoring the primacy of political solutions in conflict management.
