The Kingdom of Morocco has significantly amplified its strategic presence within the African Union (AU) since its historic reintegration in 2017. Following extensive regional consultations across North Africa, the country secured multiple high-level positions across various AU organs and frameworks. This expanded footprint reflects Morocco’s rising stature in continental governance, underscoring its unwavering commitment to the AU’s core priorities—from institutional reforms and sound governance to organizational financing, economic integration, and tackling development challenges.
Nine key leadership roles underscore Morocco’s rising clout
Through strategic negotiations and sustained diplomatic engagement, Morocco has earned nine prominent leadership positions, ranking highest among North African nations in elective roles. Among these, the Kingdom will serve as vice-president of the ministerial committee overseeing African candidacies within the international system. Additionally, it will hold the vice-presidency of the contributions committee, a pivotal body responsible for assessing member states’ financial contributions.
Technical and sectoral committees: shaping Africa’s shared future
In specialized technical committees—essential to shaping common policies—Morocco has been granted seats on the justice and legal affairs committee, as well as the committee for economic development, tourism, trade, industry, and mineral resources. The Kingdom also holds the vice-presidency of the permanent representatives’ bureau dedicated to institutional reforms and will chair the subcommittee on environmental matters. Its influence extends further to the subcommittee on human rights, democracy, and governance.
This heightened representation includes Morocco’s election to the board of the African Centre for Migration Studies and Research, enabling national experts to actively shape the institution’s agenda. Such appointments reflect the trust placed in the vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, whose migration policies are grounded in humanitarian principles, solidarity, and shared responsibility. These nine strategic roles reaffirm Morocco’s dynamic influence and ongoing contribution to the AU’s operations.
From withdrawal to leadership: a transformative diplomatic journey
Morocco’s re-entry into the AU on January 30, 2017, during the Addis Ababa summit, marked a decisive break from a 33-year absence following its withdrawal from the Organization of African Unity (OAU) in 1984. This return signified more than a symbolic reintegration—it catalyzed tangible diplomatic achievements, particularly in safeguarding territorial integrity. The Moroccan diplomatic corps shifted the Sahara dossier from a reactive posture to one of proactive leadership, effectively neutralizing opposition maneuvers within AU bodies.
This pragmatic approach has granted Morocco an indispensable platform to champion its vital interests. The bold diplomacy of recent years has not only fostered seamless reintegration but also accelerated the signing of strategic bilateral agreements with numerous African states, paving the way for deeper economic cooperation and continental cohesion.
