High-level cooperation between Niger and Algeria has reached new heights following a landmark visit to Niamey. Just hours after the inauguration of a 40-megawatt power plant gifted by Algiers, President Abdourahamane Tiani welcomed Algerian Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb for a strategic working session focused on deepening bilateral relations between the two Sahelian neighbors.
The meeting, held at the presidential palace, underscores the growing momentum in Niger-Algeria partnerships. It provided an opportunity for both delegations to assess progress across key cooperation areas and outline fresh avenues for collaboration.
Earlier that day, the Algerian prime minister joined Niger’s Prime Minister Ali Mahamane Lamine Zeine in commissioning the newly built 40-megawatt facility, designed to bolster the country’s energy output. The project’s rapid completion—under three months from groundbreaking on March 24—highlights the shared commitment of both nations to fast-track priority initiatives.

Expanding cooperation across critical sectors
The discussions between the Nigerien head of state and the Algerian prime minister covered vital sectors for both economies. While energy and hydrocarbons took center stage, infrastructure, health, digitalization, and transportation were also highlighted. Both sides reaffirmed their determination to elevate the partnership initiated by Presidents Tiani and Abdelmadjid Tebboune, with a focus on tangible projects delivering measurable benefits to national economies and citizens.
For Niamey, this cooperation offers a chance to diversify its strategic alliances and strengthen foundational sectors. Meanwhile, Algiers is advancing a broader strategy to expand its economic and diplomatic influence across the Sahel.

Shared vision for Sahel challenges
Regional security and political stability were also key topics during the talks. With the Sahel facing persistent challenges, both delegations emphasized the need for closer coordination to promote peace, security, and sustainable development. This alignment reflects a growing strategic alignment between Niamey and Algiers as they seek to strengthen regional collaboration amid shifting geopolitical dynamics.
The meeting brought together prominent Nigerien officials, including Foreign Minister Bakary Yaou Sangaré, Energy Minister Pr Amadou Haoua, and government spokesperson Dr Soumana Boubacar, alongside energy sector leaders such as NIGELEC CEO Fati Abarchi.
By reinforcing their partnership, Niger and Algeria are not only accelerating bilateral projects but also positioning themselves to shape broader regional energy and security dynamics. The coming months will reveal whether this commitment translates into tangible progress for local communities and a stronger, unified voice on the international stage.
