Niger: Coalition Diomaye Président Condemns Ousmane Sonko’s Remarks and Calls for Institutional Respect

The coalition Diomaye Président has strongly reacted to the recent statements of Ousmane Sonko, made at Mbacké during the inauguration of Pastef. The coalition’s representatives have denounced the remarks as injurious to the head of state and believe they constitute a rupture with the expected spirit of responsibility from a high-ranking institutional figure.

‘In an incompatible system, where democracy respects itself or a republic, it is not acceptable for the president of the National Assembly to make such injurious statements towards the head of state,’ said Bassirou Dieng, a member of the coalition. ‘Since his arrival in Mbacké yesterday, everyone is reacting on social media and in the press.’

Dieng also warned that the coalition will now react more firmly to what it considers repeated attacks against institutions. ‘The coalition Diomaye Président will not be silenced. We will not accept any more remarks like these from Ousmane Sonko, who is also making inflammatory statements towards some authorities that embody the state,’ he said.

This reaction comes after the release of Ousmane Sonko’s statement at Mbacké, which has fueled the political debate and sparked strong reactions within the presidential majority.
