OL fights for Ligue 1 match postponement ahead of potential Champions League playoff

Olympique Lyonnais requests Ligue 1 opener delay, LFP declines

The management of Olympique Lyonnais (OL) has formally requested the postponement of the club’s opening Ligue 1 fixture against Toulouse, scheduled for August 22, to better prepare for potential UEFA Champions League playoff matches. However, the French Football Federation (LFP) has rejected the proposal.

Strategic timing considerations

With preparations underway for the Champions League third qualifying round fixtures against Paços de Ferreira on August 4 or 5 (first leg) and August 11 (return leg), OL’s coaching staff under Paulo Fonseca began pre-season training on June 29. Should the team advance, they would face playoff matches within the following two-week window—directly overlapping with the Ligue 1 season opener.

LFP’s firm stance on scheduling integrity

In an official communication sent to the LFP, OL’s leadership emphasized the importance of optimal player availability during a compressed international calendar. The request mirrored similar pleas made by Paris Saint-Germain last season, invoking the broader interests of French football. Despite these arguments, the LFP’s governing board convened via videoconference and voted unanimously against the postponement.

Key concerns raised by the LFP included the precedent of disrupting the inaugural matchday schedule, particularly as Ligue 1+ now broadcasts all fixtures. Officials stressed the importance of maintaining a full and uninterrupted league calendar from the first whistle.

What’s next for OL?

  • August 4/5: First leg of Champions League qualifier at Paços de Ferreira
  • August 11: Potential return leg at home
  • August 22: Ligue 1 season opener at Toulouse—now confirmed as scheduled
  • Late August: Possible Champions League playoff matches (dates TBA)

The club is now focused on navigating both competitions without schedule adjustments, aiming to balance squad rotation and competitive demands through a demanding early season.
