Tense Apprehension in Ouagadougou

Reports from close associates and the Federation of Islamic Associations of Burkina (FAIB) confirm that Imam Mohamad Ishaq Kindo was taken into custody on Tuesday afternoon by masked police and military personnel. This operation, which occurred just ahead of the Muslim holiday of Eid, led to confrontations between security forces and worshippers present at the scene. Several individuals close to the imam reported injuries sustained during the arrest. The current whereabouts of the religious leader remain undisclosed.

Criticism Against Proposed Legislation

Two days prior to his apprehension, an audio recording widely circulated on social media captured the imam expressing strong disapproval of a legislative proposal, adopted in March, designed to regulate the exercise of religious freedoms within Burkina Faso. In his sermon, Mohamad Ishaq Kindo cautioned authorities against any intentions to prohibit public prayers. He further urged the nation’s leadership to “reflect more deeply on the implications of their actions before proceeding.”

Protests Dispersed by Security Forces

Hours after the arrest, hundreds of citizens gathered in Ouagadougou, demanding the immediate release of the imam. According to eyewitness accounts, security forces deployed tear gas to disperse the demonstration. In response to the escalating situation, the Federation of Islamic Associations of Burkina appealed to Muslim faithful for “calm, restraint, and serenity” amidst the rising tensions in African politics.
