Cameroon’s opposition leader Jean-Michel Nintcheu has formally requested the Constitutional Council to declare a presidential vacancy, citing President Paul Biya’s absence from the country for over 44 days.

The 93-year-old president has been in Switzerland since June 7 for what was initially described as a private visit. His prolonged absence has reignited discussions about his health and ability to govern. Cameroonians are divided on the matter, with reactions varying sharply between political factions.

On his Facebook page, Nintcheu, a former SDF member from Douala, issued a direct appeal: « The Constitutional Council must declare the vacancy at the summit of the state », he wrote on July 17.

Ruling party responds

The ruling RDPC party has dismissed concerns about a power vacuum. « The power is not vacant. The Lion has not left », declared Christophe Mien Zok, RDPC propaganda director. Meanwhile, President Biya continues to sign official documents and greetings from Geneva, including a congratulatory message to French President Emmanuel Macron on France’s National Day, July 14.
