Ousmane sonko elected president of Senegal’s national assembly after resignation

Within just four days of being removed from his position as Prime Minister by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, Ousmane Sonko has been elected President of Senegal’s National Assembly.

The parliamentary session unfolded amidst political unrest, with opposition lawmakers boycotting the proceedings. Critics labeled the move as a « constitutional coup », highlighting the deepening divisions within the political landscape of the country.

Despite recent disagreements between Ousmane Sonko and the Head of State—both members of the Pastef party—the former Prime Minister secured overwhelming support from his political allies. The Pastef party holds a commanding majority in parliament, controlling 130 out of 165 seats.

His election to the highest legislative office signals a significant political resurgence for Sonko, who was greeted with enthusiastic applause from his party colleagues upon confirmation of the results.

Ousmane Sonko now takes over from El Malick Ndiaye, who tendered his resignation on Sunday.
