Ousmane Sonko hails constitutional reform as victory for senegalese democracy

Dakar, 29 June – Ousmane Sonko, president of the National Assembly, stated that the constitutional reform adopted Monday by the majority of members of parliament is “one of the most consolidating reforms because it improves Senegalese democracy and transparency in public management.”

“This constitutional reform is one of the most consolidating, allowing us to take giant steps in perfecting Senegalese democracy and in transparency in public management,” he declared.

Sonko presided over the plenary session examining Bill No. 17/2026 on constitutional revision, an initiative by deputies from the Pastef-Les patriotes parliamentary group.

The head of the parliamentary institution announced that the adopted text has been sent to the head of state “for the next steps.”

“I will not invoke Article 103. I will ask the president of the Republic to promulgate this law, simply and purely, because the Constitutional Council, whose decisions are binding on all public, administrative and political authorities, simultaneously ensures both adoption and approval,” he explained.

According to him, the vote on the bill marks the end of the adoption process for this important text.

Ousmane Sonko provided a historical overview of the revision process, which began several years ago.

“The amendments just integrated into the Constitution have traversed the entire political journey of our commitments,” he added.

“Dialogue is important, but it is not institutional. This dialogue existed,” Sonko said.

He recalled that the president of the Republic had called for a political dialogue, which Pastef-Les patriotes attended alongside many other political parties and organisations of all affiliations.

Sonko did not fail to congratulate the deputies behind the constitutional revision proposal, which he described as “consistent with what emerged from the dialogue.”

Regarding the asset declaration, the former prime minister assured that he would fulfil this requirement very soon after leaving the head of government.

“I declared my assets as prime minister. I have three months to make another declaration upon leaving office. I will declare next week,” Ousmane Sonko announced.
