Paris Saint-Germain on the brink of another ligue 1 championship

Paris Saint-Germain faces RC Lens in a pivotal Ligue 1 encounter this Wednesday, May 13th. This rescheduled fixture from the 29th round presents a golden opportunity for the capital club to secure its fifth consecutive French championship title.

Is PSG heading for a double triumph? Having already secured a spot in the Champions League final for the second consecutive year, the team from Parc des Princes could clinch its first trophy of the season this Wednesday. Leading the league comfortably with 73 points, the Parisians travel to face Lens, who have enjoyed an exceptional season and currently sit in a strong second position with 67 points. This crucial match in hand for the 29th round of Ligue 1 is scheduled for 9 PM.

The club, aiming for its 14th overall Ligue 1 title and fifth in a row, has a historic chance. It could become only the third team in the 21st century to mathematically secure the league title during a match against its direct challenger. This rare feat was previously achieved by Lyon in the 2001-2002 season and by PSG itself in 2017-2018.

A draw or victory will crown Paris champions

To claim the trophy as early as this Wednesday, Luis Enrique’s squad simply needs to avoid defeat. A draw at the Stade Bollaert-Delelis, a venue where the northern club has suffered only two losses this season, would be enough for them to celebrate. With 74 points, they would be out of reach by the final matchday on Sunday, May 17th, as Lens would then have 68 points. Similarly, a Parisian victory would also definitively seal the championship’s fate with an even greater points margin.

Goal difference provides a significant advantage

Conversely, to maintain even a slight hope, Lens must secure a home victory against a Parisian side dealing with some key player injuries. If Lens were to win, they would reach 70 points, closing the gap to three points behind their opponents. This would theoretically allow them to draw level on points on the 38th and final day, provided PSG also loses its derby against Paris FC.

However, even this specific scenario is unlikely to prevent Marquinhos’ teammates from lifting another title. PSG boasts a vastly superior goal difference (+44 compared to Lens’ +29). This metric serves as the tie-breaker in case of equal points. Therefore, even a defeat would likely not cost Paris Saint-Germain the top spot, unless Lens manages to overcome the significant 15-goal difference separating the two teams.

Why the champions league final is scheduled earlier at 6pm

Parisian coach Luis Enrique expressed his confidence after their recent 1-0 victory against Brest. He acknowledged Lens’s impressive performance throughout the season, stating, «We must commend what Lens has achieved all season; they’ve performed at an incredible level, making it very difficult for us.» However, he added with conviction, «we are already champions, 99.9%.» The question now is whether that percentage will reach a full 100% this Wednesday, or if the wait will extend until the league’s ultimate weekend.
