Sahel alliance and Russia deepen strategic ties in Niamey talks

Diplomatic relations between the Sahel Alliance (AES) and Russia reached new heights this past Wednesday, July 8, as Niamey hosted the second ministerial consultations between their foreign affairs representatives. The gathering brought together the foreign ministers of Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso alongside Russia’s top diplomat, Sergei Lavrov.

Niger’s Bakary Yaou Sangaré, Mali’s Abdoulaye Diop, and Burkina Faso’s Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré engaged in productive discussions that yielded concrete agreements to deepen collaboration across multiple fronts. Mali’s Diop highlighted the fruitful and consistent dialogue between the AES and Russia, which has already borne significant dividends in both military cooperation and economic development initiatives, all underpinned by shared diplomatic objectives.

The AES ministers underscored the urgent need to boost joint counterterrorism efforts, emphasizing the importance of strengthening the operational capabilities of the Sahel Alliance’s unified force. They also called for enhanced economic partnerships to advance the goals outlined in the AES’s second-year roadmap.

For his part, Russia’s Sergei Lavrov reaffirmed Moscow’s commitment to nurturing a mutually advantageous partnership with the Sahel Alliance. He reiterated Russia’s readiness to support regional security initiatives while promoting sustainable development to improve livelihoods across the alliance’s member states.

This latest round of talks in Niamey follows their inaugural session held in Moscow in April 2025, marking another milestone in Lavrov’s recent diplomatic engagements across the African continent.
