Senegal assembly dissolution: Sonko warns of power’s defeat in elections

Rising political tensions in Senegal have taken a new turn as discussions intensify over a potential dissolution of the National Assembly. During a recent gathering in Linguère, Ousmane Sonko, leader of the Pastef party, made his stance clear, issuing a bold warning to President Bassirou Diomaye Faye.

The opposition figure asserted that any move to dissolve the Assembly and hold early legislative elections would backfire on the ruling party. Sonko confidently predicted that his coalition would secure a sweeping victory in such a scenario.

« If elections are held at the local level, we will defeat them. If the Assembly is dissolved, it will be even worse for them—and that’s exactly what we want, because we will crush them,» he declared.

Sonko went further, suggesting that the president could face severe political instability following an electoral setback, hinting at the possibility of an early resignation before the 2029 term.

Sonko urges calm among supporters

Beyond the electoral implications, the Pastef leader emphasized the need for restraint among his followers. He cautioned them against falling into traps set by opponents seeking to provoke unrest.

« I urge everyone to remain vigilant and composed. Some are actively trying to incite Pastef supporters into responding, so they can justify dissolving the party and revoking its registration,» he explained.

Sonko believes that if his supporters avoid provocation while staying mobilized, the upcoming elections could unfold as a decisive advantage for his party—a contest he described as « a walk in the park.»
