Senegal constitutional council’s decision prioritizes rule of law

The President of Senegal’s National Assembly, Ousmane Sonko, addressed the nation this Thursday following the Constitutional Council’s ruling that declared the constitutional reform law passed by lawmakers unconstitutional. The leader of the Pastef party acknowledged the decision of the « Seven Sages », emphasizing that it must be respected by all.

« Beyond any comments or opinions on the reasoning behind the decision, one thing remains clear: this ruling applies to everyone. Noted, » Ousmane Sonko stated in a public statement.

For the head of the legislative body, this moment underscores the importance of institutions operating within their designated roles. « When institutions fulfill their duties within their respective mandates, no crisis can arise, » he remarked.

Ousmane Sonko further reaffirmed the National Assembly’s commitment to its constitutional responsibilities. « The National Assembly will continue to exercise its mandate fully: laws will be passed or rejected to honor the commitments made to the resilient and honorable people of Senegal, » he declared.
